Ronald William Howard (born March 1, 1954) is an American film director, producer, and actor. Howard first came to prominence as a child actor, guest-starring in some television series, including an episode of 'The Twilight Zone'. He gained national attention for playing young Opie Taylor, the son of Sheriff Andy Taylor (played by Andy Griffith) in the sitcom 'The Andy Griffith Show' from 1960 through 1968. Howard received the Academy Award for Best Director and Academy Award for Best Picture for 'A Beautiful Mind' in 2001.

The 'Apollo 13' film is a 1995 American space docudrama film directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Ed Harris, and Gary Sinise. Howard went to great lengths to create a technically accurate movie, employing NASA's (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) assistance in astronaut and flight controller training for his cast and obtaining permission to film scenes aboard a reduced gravity aircraft for a realistic depiction of the weightlessness experienced by the astronauts in space. Released to cinemas in the United States on June 30, 1995, 'Apollo 13' received critical acclaim and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture (winning for Best Film Editing and Best Sound).
