When was the first carbonated soft drink invented?

It is unbelievable but the first successful attempt to create a carbonated soft drink was made more than 200 years ago when one of the famous English chemists (the inventor) had discovered the easy way to make carbonated water similar to the natural one. He just infused H₂O with CO₂! Soon the beverage became very popular, mostly because of the bubbles. People started to add sugar and natural flavorings (such as vanilla) to the mixture. Nowadays the invention is called "soda water".

With the answer options given, it was pretty easy to figure out the correct answer. 20 & 50 years, automatic elimination. 100 years ago? Coke was on the market in the late 1800s. Only left one reasonable answer. Fact that I'm a carbonated drink fiend didn't factor in.

Knew that Coke was invented in 1887 and it wasn't the first-ever soft drink, so went with 200 years.

i knew it had to be over 100 years ago because coke and Dr Pepper were from the 1800s, but was surprised it was over 200 years.

More information is needed for the answer. The discovery was made by "One of the famous English chemists". If he was indeed famous - what was his name? And as others noted, was it carbonated water or soda? How can a "success" be defined with no factual backup information? Very insufficient answer!
