Who invented the mobile phone ?
Today we can't live without our cell phones. They follow us everywhere and help us with a lot of everyday activities, making everything faster and easier. Mobile phones are changing rapidly, providing us with a lot of new possibilities every year. But who do we have to thank for it?
Martin "Marty" Cooper is an American engineer. He is a pioneer and visionary in the wireless communications industry. While at Motorola in the 1970s, Cooper conceived the first handheld mobile phone in 1973 and led the team that developed it and brought it to market in 1983.He is considered the "father of the cell phone"and is also cited as the first person in history to make a handheld cellular phone call in public.

True but. Ham radio operators in the northern Illinois and the mountainous SW were building and using radio repeaters to connect low power mobile radios before that.

You make a very good point there Peter B. I recall many homes had ham radio towers in their yard and operators became addicted to staying on it 24/7. Addicted to the point of having a designated area set up with a recliner for napping and never sleeping in their beds. Much like people today addicted to interactive games etc. All things within reason though. Mr & Ms Cooper took the concept developed and capitalized on it. Thankfully, now we can all share in the joy of cellular phone communication.

Had one in 1983. The sim card was the size of a credit card and the battery lasted three hours on standby but less than an hour of use. Calls and text only of course except there was no one to text. It cost £650 Sterling which would be around £3000 today. I can now walk into a shop (store) and buy a perfectly acceptable 4g smartphone for less than £60... amazing really.
