Who invented the telephone?

Alexander Graham Bell had long been fascinated by the idea of transmitting speech, and by 1875 had come up with a simple receiver that could turn electricity into sound. On January 28, 1878, two years after Alexander Graham bell was awarded a patent on his primitive telephone, the world's first commercial telephone exchange opened for business in New Haven, Connecticut. George W. Coy, Herrick P. Frost and Walter Lewis, with a great deal of courage, some makeshift equipment, and $600 of borrowed money, put Mr. Bell's wonderful invention to work. Their enterprise was called the District Telephone Company of New Haven.

He ripped off an Italian man who brought his idea to bell's lab. bell does NOT hold the patent for the first telephone. ANTONIO MEUCCI is the MAN!

He may have invented it but both he and Mr.Thomas Edison were in a race to invent it but Mr. Bell got the patent first but it was Mr. Edison who perfected it so people wouldn't have to yell in the phone.

Meiucci invented the telephone Bell took his idea and the credit. I believe he got the plans from Meucci's wife, who thought it was a worthless invention.

Anyone on the east coast 30b years ago paid their phone bill to Bell Telephone until the monopoly was broken up and Verizon emerged as the lead provider so if you are 40 or above this was a no brainer

Once again, way too easy and I can't believe that there are some who think that Benjamin Franklin invented the this crazy contraption. I also just want to add that I can imagine that first telephone call ever and Alexander Bell receiving the recorded message " You have reached the office of Alexander Bell and associates. If you received this message, we are either out of the office or on another line. Please leave your name, phone number and a brief message and we will get back with you as soon as possible. Thank you for calling." or maybe it was the following recording: We're sorry you have reached a number that has either been disconnected or is no longer in service. If you feel you have reached this recording in error, please check the number or dial your operator. Message 101.
