Jim Ryun, the first high school student to run the mile in under four minutes, was a silver medalist in the 1500 meter run at the 1968 Olympics. He held the world record in the mile, the last American to do so as of 2019. He also held world records in the 880-yard run and 1500 meters as well as the 880 and mile indoors. He initially set the records in the mile and 880 when he was 19 years old

Ryun, a Republican, later served in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the Second Congressional District in Kansas from 1996-2007. He was defeated for re-election in November 2006. He later attempted to regain his Congressional seat, but lost in the Republican primary.
