Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 – 3 September 1658) was an English military and political leader and later Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland.

Cromwell is one of the most controversial figures in the history of the British Isles, considered a regicidal dictator by historians such as David Sharp, a military dictator by Winston Churchill, and a hero of liberty by John Milton, Thomas Carlyle, and Samuel Rawson Gardiner. His tolerance of Protestant sects did not extend to Catholics; his measures against them in Ireland have been characterised by some as genocidal or near-genocidal, and his record is harshly criticised in Ireland. He was selected as one of the ten greatest Britons of all time in a 2002 BBC poll.

A very short answer. I would have thought the answer would also have said why Cromwell came to power following the execution of Charles I (The House of Stuart) in 1649 - leaving an interregnum until Cromwell's ascension as noted by you. He was succeeded in 1658 by Richard Cromwell but the following year the House of Stuart came back to the throne through Charles II who ruled until 1685. There were 3 other Stuart Monarchs - James II, William III and Mary II, Anne who died in 1714. Thereafter the throne passed to the House of Hanover. Charles I remains the only British Monarch to lose his head after William I (the Conqueror)
