When in 1973 Spiro Agnew resigned, Gerald Ford was nominated to fill the vice presidency. In 1974 another combination of circumstances influenced Ford's political career: Richard Nixon resigned, making Ford the US commander-in-chief. This way, the 38th President of the US is the only person to have served as both president and vice president and never be elected to any of the two offices.
