Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzbekistan) won the FIDE Open World Rapid Chess Championship at Warsaw, Poland by defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia) in a tiebreaker and dethroning Magnus Carlsen, the current World Number 1, 2020 champion. Nodirbek won the title along with a prize of $60,000, where he lost only one match against the Ukrainian Anton Korobov, and tied in five others. The youngest ever 17 year old Uzbeki Grand Master (GM), received the Mard Uglon ("Brave Son") Presidential medal.

FIDE was founded in Paris, France, on July 20, 1924. As of 2020, there are 195 member federations of FIDE.

The World Rapid Chess Championship is held to determine the world champion in chess played under rapid time controls.The event took place at the Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw, Poland between 26 and 28 December 2021, using a Swiss-system with 13 rounds for the open tournament and 11 rounds for the women's tournament. Time controls for the tournament are 15+10, meaning each player initially starts with 15 minutes and gains 10 seconds increment with each move. 176 players took part in the open tournament, and 103 in the women's tournament. Alexandra Kosteniuk, aged 37 years old, of Russia won the 2021 Women's World Rapid Chess Championship.
