Who is this?
Maggie Smith made her stage debut in 1952 and has had an extensive, varied career in stage, film and television spanning over sixty years. She currently stars as Violet Crawley on Downton Abbey, for which she has won a Golden Globe, two Screen Actors Guild awards and two consecutive Emmy awards.
You may also remember her as Minerva McGonagall, the strict but fair Head of Gryffindor house in the Harry Potter films. She is always gorgeous!

Ah dear Maggie. She has worn a very good Scottish accent in two of her most iconic roles: Miss Jean Brodie and Professor Minerva McGonagall.
She's also mother to the divine Toby Stephens, who played a fantastic Mr Rochester in the BBC's most recent adaptation of Jane Eyre, and stars in the series Black Sails.
God bless, Dame Maggie. :-)

Anybody who only knows Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey or her Harry Potter films should order a DVD of "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie." It was an astonishing performance and she won an Academy Award for it...Her romantic interest in the film was also her real life husband...Please check it out...If you love her you will love this film!

A truly wonderful actress. Downton Abbey finished some time ago - sadly. There is talk of a film or reprise in another form but Maggie Smith has said no as the Dowager would be so ancient as to be unbelievable. She said it should start with her funeral or after she has died. I have the DVDs of every episode of Downton Abbey and never get tired of watching it.

Val Wilkinson, I agree it's a shame for us not to see more of her work, but she's now in her 87th year, and if she wants to semi-retire I think we have to agree that that's fine!

Marianne Frederick Halterman, I don't think Maggie Smith was in Carry On Teacher, nor any of the Carry On films.
Like you, I first saw her as Jean Brodie; well before I read the book. I always saw Maggie Smith in my mental image of Miss Brodie thereafter when I did read it.

The first movie I saw her in was "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie", and then wasn't she in "Carry On, Teacher!"?

Val Wilkinson, I'm sure she has plenty of money by now, and (as an actor myself, so I know of what I speak) acting is an exhausting profession.
