Luciano Pavarotti, (12 October 1935 – 6 September 2007) was an Italian operatic tenor who also crossed over into popular music, eventually becoming one of the most commercially successful tenors of all time. He made numerous recordings of complete operas and individual arias, gaining worldwide fame for the brilliance and beauty of his tone—especially into the upper register—and eventually established himself as one of the finest tenors of the 20th century. I grew up in the late 60's and 70's watching and listening to rock and roll. The mere thought of listening to opera was laughable. Christmas of 2001 at my Grandma's we all watched the Kennedy Center Honor's as Pavarotti was given the award. I had heard of him, but never had I heard him him sing before. I had no idea this was opera. It was beautiful. I was transfixed and moved to tears. I also bought a 3 Tenors CD as soon as I returned home.

I have an ancient (though still good) vinyl recording of Der Rosenkavalier, where he plays the Singer (an Italian role in a German opera) and in the sleeve notes there's a picture of him without a beard!

One of a kind. What he, Domingo, Carerras, and Beverly Sills did in bringing opera into the main stream in the '80's and '90's was amazing. We have no one in opera today with the same charisma these artists possessed. Domingo and Carreras are still around but seem to not be doing much performing anymore. The end of an era.
