Led by team captain Pat Cummins (born 1993), Australia beat England at the 2021-22 Ashes series held between 8th December 2021 and 18th January 2022. The series was played at five venues across Australia, at which the Australian team won all matches except one. Cummins participated in all but the second match, which he missed due to COVID-19 isolation rules.

The Ashes is a Test cricket series played between England and Australia. The name comes from a small pot or urn of ashes, which was made and presented to the England captain in 1882. It was based on a joke printed in 'The Sporting Times', an English newspaper, which jokingly claimed English cricket had died and its body had been cremated after losing to Australia. Since 1882, the two countries have regularly competed to win a replica of the urn.

Pat Cummins was announced as the 47th captain of the Australian men's Test cricket team on 26th November 2021, following the resignation of the previous captain, Tim Paine. Fellow cricketer, Steve Smith, was announced as the vice-captain. Cummins started playing Test cricket in 2011 at the age of 18 but had to take several years out due to injury. He returned to the Australian team in 2017 and went on to win the Allan Border Medal for best Australian cricketer of the year in 2019. In the same year, he was named the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test cricketer of the year.
