'Doc Martin' is a British comedy series starring Martin Clunes (born 1961) as Doctor Martin Ellingham. Inspired by the fictional Dr Martin Bamford in the 2000 film 'Saving Grace', the show revolves around Doctor Ellingham's interactions with his patients in the sleepy Cornish village of Portwenn, who call him "Doc Martin".

Doctor Ellingham was once a successful vascular surgeon at Imperial College London but had to stop practising after developing a fear of blood (haemophobia). He took up the post as General Practioner (GP) in the village under the false belief that it would be a quiet, easy job. Instead, life in the GP surgery is full of chaos, not helped by the incompetent receptionist.

Despite his medical expertise, Ellingham lacks social skills and his patients perceive him as hot-tempered and rude. Due to his insensitive nature, Ellingham is unlucky in love but gradually develops a relationship with the local schoolteacher. Naturally, the relationship has many ups and downs throughout the series.

Martin Clunes is most recognised for starring in the nine series of 'Doc Martin', which aired between 2004 and 2019. He also had major roles in 'Men Behaving Badly' (1992) and has narrated several documentaries for British television. Clunes was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2015 Birthday Honours for his services to drama.
