Who was Herodotus?
Herodotus was born in about 485 B.C. in the Greek city of Halicarnassus and died in around 425 B.C. Herodotus was a writer and a historian who is a considered to be the creator of history as a study, "The Father of History" - that's how he was called by the Roman writer Cicero in his great work "The Histories". Some people criticized Herodotus and said he was "The Father of Lies": they thought history was just a set of tall tales. Anyway, Herodotus was the first one to collect historical facts in a systematical sequence and arrange them into a historiography.

The "correct" answer is obviously wrong! Herodotus lived in the 5th Century BC and not the 5th Century. Oh well, what is round 1000 YEARS between friends! :-)

To those that dont understand BC yrs.= Before Christ. AD= after Christ. So BC yrs count from O back to the higher number of yrs before Christ was born. So the dates of his birth and death show that he lived 60 yrs.

Takes me back over 60 years to when Miss Doyle was trying to drum ancient Greek into my teenage brain. Herodotus was one of the set books.

I would love to know why Herodotus decided to do that, to seek facts, and out together a sequence that details the history of a place.

rita coughlin, 485 BC is 485 yrs b4 the birth of Christ. 425 BC is 425 yrs b4 Christ. So it shows that he lived 60 yrs. 1BC would be 1yr b4 Christ. So BC yrs are counted back from the birth of Chist.

rita coughlin, I don't know if someone already mentioned this before now. But, chronologically, b.c. years go from larger numbers to zero. And a.d. years go from 0 to larger numbers.
