Who was Pluto named after?

March, 24: Planet Pluto was named

It was actually named after Pluto, the Roman god of the underworld.When Pluto was first discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930, he was given the honor of giving it a name. Although they were calling it Planet X informally, they needed something that matched the rest of the planets in the Solar System. The name Pluto was suggested by Venetia Burney, an 11-year old school girl in England. She was interested in ancient mythology, and thought that Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, made a good name. She suggested Pluto, to match the Roman god names given to the other planets.

All the planets were named after Greek and Roman gods and goddesses except earth. The name earth is an english/german name that means ground. It comes from the old English word 'eor(th)e' and 'ertha'. In German it's 'erde'.

A long time before christianity, you had several gods and religions. Thor, Poseidon, Bacchus, Athena, Pluto... Roman and Greek gods existed a long time before christianity. But as usual, some people thought being polytheistic was bad and they were afraid of this, and so they created what you call today christian belief, a monotheistic religion. Don't get me wrong. In fact, everything christian today, has ancient pagan origins, such as Easter, Christmas and more... I am Aheist, but at least I know what I talk about...
