Hillary Clinton is the only first lady to have been subpoenaed; she testified before a federal grand jury in 1996. She spoke about the Whitewater controversy which involved investigations into real estate investments. Hillary and Bill Clinton and their associates were under suspicion for their actions. No charges were brought against Hillary related to this or other investigations during her husband's presidency. Her marriage to the president was subject to considerable public discussion following the Lewinsky scandal of 1998, and overall her role as first lady drew a polarized response from the American public.

In June 2014, Clinton released Hard Choices, a memoir published by Simon & Schuster, which rose to number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. This book is Hillary Clinton’s inside look at the choices and challenges she has faced in her life. It has been called, “a subtle, finely calibrated work…with succinct and often shrewd appraisals of the complex web of political, economic, and historical forces in play around the world” (The New York Times).
