Hadendoa is the name of a nomadic subdivision of the Beja people, known for their support of the Mahdiyyah rebellion during the 1880s to 1890s. The area historically inhabited by the Hadendoa is today parts of Sudan, Egypt and Eritrea.

"Fuzzy-Wuzzy" was originally used by British soldiers in the 19th century as a name for the Hadendoa warriors on the Red Sea coast of the Sudan, and referred to their elaborate butter-matted hairstyles.

Kipling's poem Fuzzy-Wuzzy praises the Hadendoa for their martial prowess, because "for all the odds agin' you, Fuzzy-Wuz, you broke the square". This could refer to either or both historical battles between the British and Mahdist forces where British infantry squares were broken.

The poem should be read against the background of bayonet drill, (thrusting a bayoneted rifle into a straw filled dummy). As in "'ere's to you Fuzzy Wuzzy" whilst thrusting firmly forward with rifle and bayonet.
