'The Lunar Chronicles' by American author Marissa Meyer is a science fiction fantasy series consisting of four young adult novels, a novella and a short story collection. Each of the four novels contains the main storyline as well as a science fictional twist on a classic fairy tale. Tales include 'Cinderella', 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'Rapunzel', and 'Snow White'.

The main story is set in the distant future, where tensions are growing between Earth and the colony Luna. Meanwhile, the Earth is plagued by a deadly pandemic that only affects Earthmen, whereas those on Luna are immune and may have an antidote.

The first book 'Cinder' was published in 2012 and introduces the main character, a cyborg living with her stepmother and her two stepsisters in New Beijing. Unknown to Cinder, she is the missing Luna princess and the only person who could potentially rid the colony of their wicked queen.

Cinder, the cyborg, finds herself in danger when the queen learns of her existence. The following novels continue the story and introduce new characters, who play a vital role in helping Cinder. 'Scarlet' (2013), 'Cress' (2014) and 'Winter' (2015) continue the main storyline, and 'Fairest' (2015) contains the prequel to the series. 'Stars Above' (2016) provides a glimpse of life after the main series ends.

'The Lunar Chronicles' was Marissa Meyer's (born 1984) debut work. She loves fairy tales and plans to incorporate them into her future novels.
