Why would someone need a rhogam shot after giving birth?

A rhogam shot is necessary both during pregnancy and after birth for the mother if she has a different rh blood type then the baby. For example if a mother has a rh negative blood type and the baby is a rh positive blood type her body may have an immune response if any blood gets mixed at any point of the birth or pregnancy. The body will then think it's sick and try to fight off an illness that isn't there, causing issues for future pregnancies and other health issues. The rhogam shot helps prevent the body from developing rh positive antibodies. Keep the mother healthy and safe for future pregnancies.

I believe this only applies if the mother is Rh negative and the infant Rh positive, not vice versa.

RhoGAM is very safe, has been used for about 50 years, and is recommended for all pregnant women with Rh-negative blood type.

That happened to me, my mother's first child, at 4 lbs. She had 5 children, the baby was 2 pd.1 Oz and 10 in.. I had the same 1st child, 4 odd only 16 inches. God is good

If "They have a negative blood type" is not a problem if the baby and mother have the same type.

Yes, I received the Rhogam shot after having my son who was RH positive.

I had it after my first pregnancy, and again after my twins were born. I carried a card for years that stated in case of miscarriage or birth, I was to receive the shot.

I found out after my miscsrriage I was Rh negative so I had to have a rhogam shot then and after having both my babies.

It has nothing to do with the mother's health it is related to the difference in the the Rh factor found in all blood types. If the mother is Rh negative RhoGAM is given to keep the mother from developing antibodies to future Rh positive babies. If the baby has Rh negative blood there is no need to give RhoGam as the mother will not develop antibodies.
