Winona Ryder did not have an acting role in the 1993 American coming-of-age drama film, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". She however had a role in the 1986 film "Lucas", an American romantic comedy-drama, in "Bram Stoker's Dracula", a 1992 American Gothic horror film, and in "Girl, Interrupted", a 1999 American psychological drama film. Ryder played Rina, a school friend; Mina Harker, Jonathan Harker's fiancée; and Susanna Kaysen, an eighteen years old diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder, respectively in the three films.

"What's Eating Gilbert Grape" is a film that was directed by Lasse Hallström and produced by Bertil Ohlsson, David Matalon, and Meir Teper. "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" was considered a box office bomb. However, the overall critical response to the film was positive. The film grossed $10 million in the US, against a budget of $11 million. DiCaprio (age 19 at the time) received his first nominations for the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
