By total land area, which of the following countries is the smallest?
Liechtenstein is the only nation completely located in the Alps it contains only 160 square kilometers while the other three countries all contain at least 300 square kilometers of land area.

Joe Mangan , Hope his (or heirs) subjects don't come to regret that decision.

The ruling prince of Liechtenstein doesn't care much for democracy. He can dismiss the government, dissolve parliament, veto parliamentary legislation and the outcomes of popular votes, abolish investigations that have been initiated and has an important role in the appointment of judges. All because of a referendum in recent years by which his subjects sold their souls. His near absolute power has frequently been denounced by international organisations.
If England had not in 1690 debarred Catholics from the throne he would today be king of the UK. The UK had a lucky escape.

Great question; questions like this one inspire me to learn more about countries and different areas, especially islands.

Barry Salt, it is in fact about 26 atolls, not one. Gan is just one of the inhabited atolls, and with the possibly the least populated.

The Maldives were called Gan when I staged through in the 1970s, a tropical atoll populated by flying squirrel bats and little else. In land area it was minute and the question was about land area, it sure wasn’t 360 square kilometres

On a Trafalgar tour of Europe we spent about 1 hour there. I would have loved more time to look around.

I've been there many times on business and the only way I could tell I was in Liechtenstein was getting up close to the Royal Palace which dominates the skyline perched as it is on a cliff above the town.

There is a kiosk in the middle of the square where you can get your passport stamped. It was the only stamp (other than entry into England) I ever got in Europe.

Drove through the country from Switzerland (no border guards), and went through Vaduz three times before I realized it was the capital. Beautiful castle overlooking the valley
