Camels are large mammals of the bovine family that are adapted to live in arid desert, steppe and prairie regions of the world. One-humped dromedary camels are indigenous to North Africa and the Middle East. Two-humped Bactrian camels are native to Central Asia. Camelids are even-toed ungulates classified in the order Cetartiodactyla, along with pigs, hippopotamuses, whales, deer, giraffes, cattle, goats, antelope, and many others.

A camel can survive for up to six months without drinking water. When water is available, a camel can drink many gallons of water in a few minutes. Camel humps do not store water; they are fat reserves that nourish the animal when food is scarce.
