Located 35 miles from Asheville, Cold Mountain is in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It originally received notoriety from the best-selling Charles Frazier novel Cold Mountain. It then went on to obtain acclaim in the 2003 motion picture. This movie was filmed in Romania where the mountain scenery is very similar to the real Cold Mountain area in North Carolina. Where this mountain is located it is one of the Great Balsam Mountains which are a part of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

To find the real mountain location, you have to go the Pisgah National Forest, Haywood County, North Carolina. Also, to note an important fact, originally it was part of the Cherokee Nation until white settlers with a land grant from the state began migrating to the mountain site land areas in 1796. At 6,030 feet, it is the tallest peak in the wilderness area. Because it is located in the government owned Pisgah National Forest, Cold Mountain hasn’t changed much since the Civil War as depicted in Frazier's book.
