For which movie did Ernest Borgnine win an Oscar?

Ermes Effron Borgnino was a well-known American actor whose career spanned more than six decades. He starred in a great number of wonderful films and TV-shows. His contemporaries knew him for his work in such films as Marty (1955), The Flight of the Phoenix (1965), Ice Station Zebra (1968), etc.; and the modern generation knows him as the original voice of Mermaid Man on SpongeBob SquarePants TV-show.

In 1955, the actor starred as a warmhearted butcher in Marty, the film version of the television play of the same name. He gained an Oscar for Best Actor for this role.

It's hard to equate a wife-beater with such a gentle soul as Marty, or a cop who marries a prostitute to keep her out of jail in The Poseidon Adventure. If it's true, he sure could play out of type. He got beaten up himself after 'killing' Frank Sinatra in From Here to Eternity. Maybe someone thought he deserved a taste of his own medicine.
