It is the only remnant of the former colonial empire of New France that remains under French control,with a population of 6,080 at the January 2011 census.

The islands are 3,819 kilometres (2,373 mi) from Brest, the nearest point in France, but 25 kilometres (16 mi) from the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada.

Its citizens are citizens of France, the monetary unit is the €, communications, such as mobile phone service/cable TV services, and electricity are 'converted' from North American specifications to European standards/specifications. They also speak Metropolitan French, not Canadian French.

Skarlett Skorsgaard St. Pierre and Miquelon is still much closer to mainland NA than Guadaloupe. Much, much closer. Because Newfoundland is part of a Canadian province only separated by the Straight of Belle Isle, it still qualifies it as a part of mainland NA. Sorry you got the answer wrong. We all learn something new everyday, at least I know I do. Quizz Club should be for fun and educational purposes, but it amazes me how people become so nit-picky over really silly $hi+. You win really nothing for getting the answer right, and lose nothing for getting the answer wrong.

Tony Smolenski, You are correct however most people still would have gotten the wrong answer. From the mainland of Canada, Sydney. Nova Scotia (Cape Breton) it is approximately 305 km to St. Pierre and Miquelon or 189.5 miles. My father was from St. John's, NFLD. I can offer you a guarantee that Sydney as well as North Sydney, Nova Scotia...AKA Cape Breton is attached to North America...mainland.

Newfoundland is not part of mainland North America as it sits in the Atlantic Ocean. As my Mom is a Newfie she will tell you it is referred to as the Rock since it is a rocky landmass in Atlantic.
