Any number of actors could hve played the role. We now only see him as Han Solo. At the time he was probably glad to get $10k for his work.

Even before these there were "Tom Corbett, Space Cadet", and then "Last in Space". By the time the '66 and '77 productions emerged the real space program was underway and the public was ready. As usual, they were ahead of the Hollywood movie producers!

It looks like the "Star Wars" franchise, is trying to stake claim, into a phenomenon, that "Star Trek" started back in the day. The difference is that "Star Trek" got it's start back in 1966. While "Star Wars" got it's start back in 1977. It is definitely looking like a good "Space War" for big bucks, through big promotional advertising, to the "General Public."
