"There you go again" was a phrase used during the second presidential debate of 1980 by Republican presidential candidate Ronald Reagan against his Democratic opponent, incumbent President Jimmy Carter. The debate was held (October 28) a week before Election Day by the League of Women Voters. Reagan not only used the quote here, he frequently would use the line in a few debates over the next few years, always with the intend to disarm his opponent.

Over the decades following the 1980s, the phrase has strongly endured in the US political lexicon and in US news headlines, as a way to quickly imply that an opponent is engaging in hyperbole or even hysterical comments.
