In the 1950s movie "Them!" who or what were "Them"?

"Them!" was a classic Sci-Fi film about monsters, released in 1954. New Mexico State Police troopers discover a little girl in shock, wandering the desert near Alamogordo, New Mexico. Turns out there's a nest of gigantic irradiated ants; they quickly become a national threat when it is discovered a young queen ant and her consorts have escaped to establish a new nest and... you can imagine the rest.

My favorite quote from that movie; " Make me a sargent, in charge of the booze!" That may not be the exact quote but it is fairly close. It's been quite a few years since I saw the movie.

I got this wrong thinking it was a Rowdy Rowdy Piper movie in which they were aliens. I then looked it up and the movie I was thinking of was They Live.

Missed the movie, but knew "them" were ants when I saw them in a tv documentary in the 1970's. I hope that I can catch it sometime.

The 1950's version of the movie "Them" was rebooted in the 1970's with the movie "Empire of the Ants." The special effects were very "cheesy" while the actors/actresses had to pretend to be eaten or killed by the giant predators back in the day.
