The 1995 film, "Se7en" (Seven) is a crime thriller that is directed by David Fincher. It stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, John C. McGinley, R. Lee Ermey, and Kevin Spacey. It is a film based on a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker. It tells us of David Mills (Pitt), a young detective who is partnered with the retiring William Somerset (Freeman). They are tasked with tracking down a serial killer, Joe Doe, (Spacey); he uses the seven deadly sins as tropes in his murders.

In the movie, there is a high point when Doe reveals that he is so jealous of Mills that he killed Tracy, Mill's wife. Her death is a result of Doe's envy. With her death, Doe tries to goad Mills into vengeance, to become wrath and shoot him. Somerset tries very hard to convince Mills not to shoot Doe, but then Doe reveals that Tracy was pregnant. The revelation is too much for Mills; he shoots Doe six times. Doe's death completes the seven sins. So police then converge and take a devastated Mills away.

Here, Doe's master plan was never as straight forward as 7 people dying for their sins. It was a complex admonition involving 7 victims and the 7 deadly sins. The plan eventually loops in on itself (with Doe and Mills playing a part in it: Doe being envious because he's unable to live a normal life in the sick world he's in, and Mills representing the law's inability to cure it). Doe wanted his master plan to be "puzzled over and studied", and as Somerset realized, Doe achieved his goal.
