In August 1967 it was “the day the running stopped” for Dr. Richard Kimble. He had spent four seasons on the ABC TV series "The Fugitive" searching for justice. It was a gripping drama where audiences wanted to know if Kimble could continue living a life on the run and survive. In the series finale, audiences had eagerly tuned in to Part I of “The Judgment”. It promised to resolve the existential plight that had Kimble running—falsely accused of murdering his wife and sentenced to death. Up until that episode, he was just a mythic hero, who was known all around the world.

In part two of the final episode "The Judgment", the climax takes place in Stafford, IN (Kimble's home town) at an amusement park. Here Kimble's effort ultimately pays off. “The Judgment” ends with the One-Armed Man (alias Fred Johnson) dead after Kimble is able to extract a confession from him. Kimble is exonerated; he is also reunited with a true love and childhood friend, Jean. They subsequently agree to start a new life.

Does this drama however have a happy ending? No, it doesn't. As a police car pulls up beside him, Kimble visibly flinches, indicating that he will probably be looking over his shoulder for years to come. This is said to be an ending that fits perfectly with the show’s sensibilities; an innocent man cannot count on or trust the police and so-called upstanding citizens and institutions will still grow to become rotten to the core.
