Black History Month is a special time of the year, when a lot of attention is given to the black people's contribution in history and culture. It is celebrated in the USA, Canada, the UK and other countries. In the USA and Canada February is devoted to the achievements of Black Americans and their role in history. In the UK Black History Month is October.

The month of February was chosen in order to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Every annual celebration in the USA is devoted to one specific theme. During the month there are a lot of local celebrations, special lectures and meetings organized.

African-American History Month became a month-long observation in 1976. Originally it was created as Negro History Week (1926) by Carter G. Woodson, a respected African American scholar.
