Robert Francis Kennedy (November 20, 1925 – June 6, 1968), also referred to by his initials RFK or by the nickname Bobby, was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 64th United States Attorney General from January 1961 to September 1964, and as a U.S. Senator from New York from January 1965 until his assassination in June 1968. He was, like his brothers John and Edward, a prominent member of the Democratic Party and has come to be viewed by some historians as an icon of modern American liberalism.

Just after midnight on June 5, 1968 (after addressing his supporters), in the ballroom at The Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California, Kennedy was shot by Sirhan Sirhan, a 24-year-old Palestinian. Kennedy was hit three times, with five other people being wounded. He was rushed to Los Angeles' Central Receiving Hospital, less than 2 miles (3.2 km) away, and then to the adjoining Good Samaritan Hospital. Despite extensive neurosurgery to remove the bullet and bone fragments from his brain, Kennedy was pronounced dead at 1:44 a.m. on June 6.
