When did India's first war of Independence take place?

India's first war of independence alias Indian Rebellion of 1857 refers to a rebellion in India against the rule of the British East India Company, that took place between May 1857 to July 1859. The rebellion began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, the rebellion posed a considerable threat to East India Company power in that region.

The rebellion has been known by many names, including the Indian Mutiny, India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857, the Rebellion of 1857, the Uprising of 1857, the Sepoy Rebellion, the Indian Insurrection and the Sepoy Mutiny.

The 'English' did NOT rule India, first point. There were English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish also involved. The British did NOT set out to 'massacre' the native peoples of the Sub Continent. Point two. The British brought a bi-chamber parliament system, a wonderful railway system, a lot of which is STILL in use. A civil service based Government, still in operation. A fine banking system too. Certain Indian women should be thankful as the British put an end to the practice of 'SUTI', which was the practice of widows being burned alive on their dead husband's funeral pyre. Even the game of cricket was brought out from Britain, and is now India's National game, and their cricket team is considered to be, by many, number one in the world. The British Raj was not based on fear as many occupations have been. Yes, there were some troubled times during the Raj, especially after the Amritsar massacre, but in general Britain did try to bring fair rule to all.

First rebellion against who. So Hindus trying to throw off the rule of Muslims were not rebellions? Or does a rebellion only count if it was against Europeans?

Carroll Price, Yeah every thing that was viewed as colonialism is wrong and against their race and culture is changed and even the history was changed to favour their side or totally muted in schools.

'Wasn't This Disaster (For Both Sides,) Started With An Issue Over Gun Ammunition?-The British Were Starting A New Army Division Of Native East Indians And Were Issuing A New Muzzle-Loading Rifle Which Uses Powder -And-Bullet-Filled Paper Cartridges That A Soldier Had To Bite To Pour The Powder Into The Gun (Followed By The Bullet.) The Paper On The Cartridges Was Coated With Pig Lard And Cattle Tallow To Waterproof Them. Because Of THIS, The Muslim Soldiers Wouldn't Touch The Cartridges Because Pork Products, (Of Any Kind, Lard Included,) Was Considered "HARAM" ("Forbidden") And The Hindu Soldiers Wouldn't Use Them Because Cattle Was Sacred Due To Their Belief In Reincarnation! For The British Colonialists, It Was All "Down Hill" From There!
