Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar Award for Best Director.

Although Alfred Hitchcock is widely considered one of the best directors in the history of cinema and was nominated five times, the master of suspense never won an Oscar Award. Hitchcock was never recognized for individual achievement in a competitive Academy Award vote situation.

Some people believe that questionable decisions have been made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences especially concerning Alfred Hitchcock when hindsight enters the picture. Hitchcock earned nominations for Rebecca, Lifeboat, Spellbound, Rear Window, and Psycho; but he lost the award each and every time. The filmmaker would eventually be honored by The Academy when it gave him the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for "creative producers whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production" in 1968. Hitchcock accepted the award and simply said, "Thank you ... very much indeed."
