The car in the picture is Nash Metropolitan, an economy class vehicle that had been sold between 1953 and 1961. The car was a true novelty created by Nash Motor Company, as most automobile producers of those times were following the "bigger-is-better" principle. Due to its size, the Metropolitan is considered to conform to the subcompact class, but the term "subcompact" had not yet been used when the car was constructed. That makes Nash Metropolitan one of the first subcompact cars in the history of the automobile industry.

After the merger of Hudson and Nash in 1954 the car was also called Hudson Metropolitan. Later it became a standalone brand. The car remains well-known and rather popular nowadays.
