That's true: only female mosquitoes feed on humans and animals' blood, while their husbands prefer drinking flower nectar.

Such a diet is based on female mosquitoes' need in protein to produce eggs. They just have to take blood meals to be able to reproduce. Male mosquitoes don't bear the burden of producing young, so they just avoid mammals and head for the flowers. If a female is not producing eggs, it also feeds on flowers.

But not all mosquito species feed on people. Some of them specialize only on birds, others prefer amphibians or reptiles.
