The U.S. Armed Forces are made up of the five armed service branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. There are three general categories of military people: active duty (full-time soldiers and sailors), reserve & guard forces (usually work a civilian job, but can be called to full-time military duty), and veterans and retirees (past members of the military).

wehunstock, Tell the to the Guardians. It is very much a military branch and if part of another nation would be the third or fourth-largest Navy in the world, with a fleet larger than the Russian Navy.
As the only branch that has both a military duty as well as a domestic and international law enforcement duty, as so not to run afoul of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1876, it was not part of the DoD.
The Commandant of the Coast Guard is one of the five (now six) Chiefs of Staff that make up the Joint Chiefs.

Stâvak Oppë Suave'llèna, Under the Homeland Security Act of 2002, the USCG became one of the 23 agencies that formed the new Department of Homeland Security. And the stipulation that in wartime the USCG becomes a component of the Navy disappeared with the National Security Act of 1947, which also created the DoD, the CIA, and the USAF.

Bob Herd, Zaza You want to qualfy the only the members of the Defense Dept whereas the Marines is a separate force and the Coast Guard also carries arms.
