While another J. Geils Band song, 1982’s “Centerfold”, hit number one on the charts, “Love Stinks” was released on the band's 1980 album of the same name, at the beginning of the band's commercial success.

"Love Stinks" reached the 38th spot on the US Top 40 Chart, where it spent three weeks. It reached number 15 in Canada. A cover of the song by Joan Jett was on the soundtrack of the 1996 film, "Mr. Wrong". Adam Sandler also covered "Love Stinks" in the 1998 film "The Wedding Singer", in which he played the title role.

The late John Warren Geils (2/20/47 – 4/11/17) was born in New York City, grew up in Morris Plains NJ, and attended Northwestern University, based in Evanston, Illinois. Mr. Geils played trumpet in Northwestern's marching band.

His father loved jazz and passed on that appreciation to John, who went by the name “J”. Boston’s folk musicians intrigued him to the extent that he left Northwestern for Worcester (Massachusetts) Polytechnic Institute, where he formed an acoustic blues group that eventually morphed into the J. Geils Band.

“Love Hurts” is by Nazareth; “All Out of Love”, Air Supply; “You Don’t Love Me Anymore”, Eddie Rabbit.
