The initial and true color of the Statue of Liberty was shiny reddish-brown color. The blueish color that we all know is actually a result of a chemical process called patination. The statue is coated with a think layer of copper and due to the reaction between metal and water, the coating turns to blueish color over time. Because of the water around the statue, there is enough moisture for the reaction between the moist and the coating to take place.
