There are more pets than children in Japan
Many Japanese women and men prefer pets to parenthood. Startlingly, in a country panicking over it's plummeting birthrate, there are now many more pets than children.
While the birthrate has been falling dramatically and the average age of Japan's population has been steadily climbing, Japan has become a pet superpower. Official estimates put the pet population at 22 million or more, but there are only 16.6 million children under 15.

I kinda think this is a good thing. Considering the deteriorating condition of our planet, I am glad at this point that God never granted me children.
It would break my heart to leave my progeny to face the dismal future that is ahead. However, as far as getting the answer right ... Yay me.

I strongly suspect that in most developed countries there are more pets than children.
I'm contributing at the moment with 4 cats and 0 children. If I consider over my lifetime, the gap is greater still with 20+ cats and other assorted pets.

Elaine Urecko, FYI The vast majority of Japanese do not eat pets. However, it has been reported that the country has been selling dog meat to some Korean customers.
Japanese lawmakers have called for an international agreement to prohibit the consumption of dogs and cats.

Japan is a patriarchal society where women are now owning their lives. Women are expected to get married and be stay at home mothers.

Joel D. Graham, I lived there for four years and I disagree with you. They have some huge cities but they have many many areas still in the natural state. They are proud of their Heritage and they really take care of all their historical sites. Even though they are a democratic country promotion for women in a company stops when she gets married and almost becomes a the battle for employment if she gets pregnant

The trouble is that there are not enough young people coming through to keep society going and to pay for health care for the elderly.
China has become aware of this problem so coupes can now have two children.

I believe at one time you were correct.
Only one child was mandatory.
Not sure that law remains in effect.
And I believe the law against girls was rescinded recently.
In a country with 8 million people...
They had some Draconian laws trying to prevent overpopulation.

Japan has been overpopulated for quite some time now so it only makes sense!
