Jane Wilson, Everyone born in North, South or Central America is an American. Is someone born in Brazil an American (specifically South American) or a Brazilian?? The answer is yes. Do you get upset when a recent graduate of Notre Dame introduces him or herself as a proud Irish American? How about a star professional hockey player who refers to himself as Canadian-American? Or a movie star who calls herself Australian-American? Or a President who is not offended when referred to as African-American? We, as citizens of the USA, are not in a melting pot.
