What are the official languages of Belgium?

Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups: the Dutch-speaking, mostly Flemish community, which constitutes about 59% of the population, and the French-speaking, mostly Walloon population, which comprises 41% of all Belgians. Additionally, there is a small group of German-speakers who live in the East Cantons located around the High Fens area, and bordering Germany.

Flemish is very similar to Dutch but it is the correct term for the language in stead of Dutch.

Yes, most of the shopkeepers spoke Flemish. How could a mistake like this be made?

I must have ended up in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium. On my way to England in my car when I was stationed in west Germany to see family friends. Had not seen a gas station for many miles and the tank was getting low. Pulled into a police station to try to get directions. Ended up using my broken German and an officers broken German to get the directions. Back then we did not have the electronics that we do today. Would have been much easier. This was in 1980.
