Preston Tucker started his car company at the end of WW2. His design was for a car with new safety features that was also easy to work on. Alex Tremulis was hired December 24, 1946, to design the car, but he was only given 6 days to finish it.

The car design proved to be very popular and Tucker started taking orders before he even had a working car. Car production began but Tucker was charged with stock fraud March of 1949. The fraud charges were because of the way he had raised funds and sold dealerships. To compound his problems the existing auto industry did not want Tucker's car to be built, and establish new safety standard requirements.

When a court order stopped production, only 37 of the Tucker Torpedo, (now called the Tucker 48) had been built. Loyal factory workers assembled another 13 cars for a total of 50 produced. The car with it's rear drive engine and many safety features turned out to be a good design, and there are several examples still running today. The most recognizable feature of the car is it's third headlight mounted in the center of the front end. This headlight turns with the steering to light up road curves.
