The Burmese is a breed of domestic cat originating in Southeast Asia. The word "Burmese" means "copper color" from Thai. The breed was developed in the USA and in Britain.

Most modern Burmese are descendants of one female cat called Wong Mau, which was brought from Burma to America in 1930 and bred with American Siamese. That is why American and British breeding standards of the Burmese are clearly different, which is unusual among high-bred domestic cats. These two cats are usually not recognized as the two different breeds, but if some cat registries do separate them, they refer to the British breed as the European Burmese.

Originally, all Burmese cats were dark brown (sable), but now their colors are various; formal recognition of these also varies by standard. Both versions of the breed are known for being amiable and playful, also with persistent vocalisation.
