Many people believe that the German Battleship Bismark was the biggest in World War 2, but Japan built a pair of ships that were larger. The Yamato and her sister ship the Musashi still hold the title as biggest battleships ever built, displacing 72,800 tons each. Both ships had 18 inch main guns which are the largest ever installed on any war ship. The advent of Aircraft Carriers as the supreme type warship ended the race for ever larger Battleships. The U.S. Iowa class Battleships built during WW2 were probably the best of the war and they remained in service for many years after the war. Both the Yamato and the Musashi were sunk by the U.S. Navy during WW2.
