The Hockey World Cup is an international field hockey competition organised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The tournament was started in 1971. It is held every four years, bridging the four years between the Summer Olympics.

The 1971 Men's Hockey World Cup was the inaugural tournament of the Hockey World Cup men's field hockey tournament. It was held from 15–24 October 1971 in Barcelona, Spain. Pakistan defeated the host team Spain with a 1-0 victory to lift the trophy. Ten teams took part in the tournament scoring a total of 66 goals in 30 matches. The tournament's top goal scorer was Tanvir Dar of Pakistan.

Five countries have dominated the event's history. Pakistan is the most successful team, having won the tournament four times. The Netherlands and Australia have each won three titles, and Germany has won two titles. India has won the tournament once.
