What does the abbreviation OS stand for in medical terms?
This abbreviation is used in ophtalmology together with OD. They are abbreviations for oculus dexter and oculus sinister, which are Latin terms for right eye and left eye.The best way to remember this is by knowing that the left side of the brain is the sinister side.

In medical terms, OS means many things such as Osteoid Surface; Obese subject; Oesophageal Spasm, or Overall survival (Oncology). Because none of them were options it was easy to go for Oculus Sinister.

Isn't the left side of the body (controlled by right brain) the sinister side, e.g. left handed? My understanding is that the eyes have crossed pathways, so both have connections to each hemisphere. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It says the left side of the brain is sinister, so right-handed people are sinister, I knew it!

For Cheryl Perkins -- we have this in common. I was born 3 months prematurely so that was part of the result. I see better in my right eye than my left, haha. I was taught to laugh @ almost everything including this.
