What is 100 divided by 1/3?

Is this new math? How can you divide something ( which means to separate) and end up with more????

Jan Sydnam Just because some of you forgot 5th grade arithmetic, doesn't make this a bad question. This type of question is meant to make you pay attention and think, not jump to conclusions.

Question really is how many 1/3s are there in 100.Stated this way, it is easier to conceptualize that the answer is 300

How many thirds in one? Three. How many thirds in 100? 300. Some crazy, logical horse s*#t, huh? It looks like someone failed elementary math class.

Richard Cullison Duh! It's IMPOSSIBLE to have THREE HUNDRED 1/3's in 100! 1/3 of 100 is 33.3! This question used the word "divided" NOT "multiplied" by!

Jan Sydnam The question was not asking you to divide 100 INTO thirds, but to divide BY 1/3.. It asked how many times 1/3 goes into 100. If 3 thirds equals 1, then 300 thirds must equal 100.

Vicki Kessler Cole You are dividing by a number that is a fraction of one. That is how the result is greater. If 3/3, (3 thirds) equals one, then 300/3 (300 thirds) equals 100. It's basic elementary school math. It is the difference between dividing INTO thirds, which yields 33 1/3 but is not what the question asks you to do, and dividing BY thirds! Whenever the divisor is a fraction of 1, the result will always be greater than the dividend! Voila!

I certainly read it wrong (I thought it was asking for 1/3 of 100 - that's what I get for not reading properly!) and I imagine most others made exactly the same mistake. Thanks for explaining the answer very succinctly and clearly, which is more than the given answer does.

Algernon Bhoomz you are cutting each apple into 3 pieces. When you are done, your 100 whole apple will be 300 pieces of apple.You will be able to provide a piece of apple to 300 students.

The question does not ask what is 1/3 of 100. It asks how many 1/3s there are in 100, and it was taught in grade school. There are 3 thirds in 1, so 300 thirds in 100. The explanation is correct.

Vicki Kessler Cole, Think of it this way... if you have 100 pies, and you divide it up in thirds (each piece is cut into 1/3 slices)... how many slices do you have? 300.

Vicki Kessler Cole, Because to divide by a fraction you invert the fraction then multiply. 3/3 = 1 so 100 divided by 1/ 3 is 100 * 3 = 300

That’s misleading.. If I had to split $100 three ways, that would be $33.33 to each.. I’m sure they’d be thrilled if it suddenly became $300! That’s multiplication!

Very simple math. Easy. 300

Simple arithmetic. When dividing by a fraction, invert the fraction and multiply. 100 X 3/1 = 300.

Ah yes, a hundred divided by 3 would have been 33 1/3... didn't read it properly...

It's down to grammar ie divide v how many. Reducing by rather than multiplying. No wonder world economics are in such a mess.

Michael Weiss, I am only 10 years younger than you. I got the answer correct, because I remember what I was taught in school. This is not new style math.

Elementary math. To divide by a fraction is the same as multillying by a reciprocal. So, to divide by 1/3 is the same as to multiply by 3/1. 3/1 is 3. So to divide by 1/3 is the same as to multiply by 3.... 100 x 3 = 300.

I dont think so. It is 33 1/3

I'm not buying that one.
