The men in the picture are W. H. Murphy, the inventor of bulletproof vest, and his assistant. In 1923 a light weight vest was manufactured by Protective Garment Corporation of New York. A special live demonstration for the police was held that year in DC, and W. H. Murphy took two slugs to the chest to prove the effectiveness of his invention. As eye witnesses claimed W. H. Murphy “didn’t bat an eye” during the demonstration.
