What is "Pi" ?

Pi is an irrational number, which can be approximated by fractions of rational numbers. By definition, Pi is the ratio of circumference to diameter of every circle, and is always the same number, no matter which circle you use to compute it.

Unfortunately you put in 2 basically correct answers and only one could be chosen. I chose the historical one since it carries the most significance. You chose the result of Pi and in truth, your answer is incorrect. Little more research needed! Pi (rather than some other Greek letter like Alpha or Omega) was chosen as the letter to represent the number 3.141592... because the letter [] in Greek, pronounced like our letter 'p', stands for 'perimeter'. So, since early Greek History, Pi is a number used to attain the circumference of a circle!

Mildred Litke, pi times radius squared is the area of a circle. pi times twice the radius is the circumference. since twice the radius is the diameter then pi times diameter is the circumfrence. divide by diamater and pi equals circumference divided by diameter. hence pi is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter.
