What is the capital of Bulgaria?

Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. The city has a population of 1.26 million, while over 1.5 million people live in its functional urban area. The city is located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the western part of the country, within less than 50 kilometers (31 mi) drive from the Serbian border. Its location in the center of the Balkan peninsula means that it is the midway between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea, whereas the Aegean Sea is the closest to it.

Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BCE. Many of the major universities, cultural institutions and commercial companies of Bulgaria are concentrated in Sofia. Sofia is one of the top 10 best places for start-up business in the world, especially in IT technologies. Sofia is Europe's most affordable capital to visit as of 2013.

Sophia: Picture it! Sicily, 1922. An attractive peasant girl who has saved her lire embarks on a glorious vacation to a Crimean resort on the Black Sea. I can’t miss this answer. So eone from that country once told be a Bulgarian jokefrom the USSR time. Bulgaria was the staunchest ally of the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe. The joke is this. This is the national day in Bulgaria. The soccer national team is playing Italy. The sun is shining. Bulgaria is winning. But the president of Bulgaria looks unhappy. He has an opened umbrella over his head. His secretary says : Me President , the sun is shining, everyone is happy , we are beating the capitalists. Why so glum. The President replis : it maysunny in Sofia, but it is raining in Moscow .

I went there about 10 years after the fall of communism. The big square in the centre of Sofia was nice except for the dancing bears who you could see were in distress. The taxi ride from the airport was weird - every time we came to a downward slope the driver put the car in neutral and we just coasted down until the car virtually stopped. Going to one of the the best restaurants in Sofia we passed many Communist era relics (hideous concrete monsters) and the meal we all had was so cheap we couldn't believe how little we paid
